EESIFLO® has traditionally manufactured ultrasonic flowmeters but in late 2005, EESIFLO ® introduced its line of versatile water in oil measurement devices. The criteria for development and production of the EASZ-1 BS& monitor was the need for an accurate, affordable and versatile watercut instrument using well known capacitance techniques, coupled with the advances of present day digital circuitry , not only with greater electronic sample rates but with a much higher resolution. Capacitance probes have been a standard water /oil measurement device in the oil industry for decades and have been considered a reliable and cost effective solution in watercut measurements of up to 65%. The EASZ-1 water in oil monitor is a well known technology with great improvements in its design and measurement stability.
Long Term Stability
Capacitance probes of all types have been around the industry for decades. They have been used to determine water oil ratios in many applications . Although a well known method , many older designs have had inherent problems with electronic drift. This has raised the need for end users to calibrate the PCB cards to known capacitance values after shipment of the devices. Some water/oil meters also needed electronic card re-calibration over time because of inherent electronic drift. The EASZ-1 BS& monitor is automatically calibrated using digital techniques within its electronics and does not suffer from electronic drift. Errors in measurement are reduced due to higher stability
Accuracy
During the past few years, electronic design and production has vastly improved. Instead of reliance on older analog techniques , a move to manufacture measurement devices using digital techniques is becoming more common. These techniques have vastly improved measurement accuracy. The EASZ-1 BS& monitor is a development that started in the 90′s but the current versions are using the latest design in electronics. The inherent electronic resolution of the EASZ-1 BS& monitor is 0.01% in the range of 1% water in oil and a lower resolution of 0.1% in the high end designs up to 65%. Built in temperature compensation improves overall accuracy since temperature change has some effect on resistive capacitance measurements. Each measurement cell will have slightly different mechanical tolerances during fabrication. This is why each individual EASZ-1 BS& unit is factory "tuned" so that the complete instrument is shipped without any offset errors due to very slight mechanical dimension differences in the cells or length and installed position of electrical components and wires
Flexibility
The EASZ-1 BS& monitor is a loop powered device . Loop power is common and readily available. This solves the problem of excessive cabling and the device itself uses very small amounts of energy. The standard version will accurately report watercut within the range of 0-25% . Since watercut values may change over time it may be necessary to have a way to modify measurement ranges of the instrument. Onsite modification of measurement ranges was in mind during the design stages and it is possible to modify measurement ranges on site for 0-1%, 0-3%,0-10% and 0-25%. A high range version is also available from 0-65%. The EESIFLO development team is also
working on a full cut meter for late 2006 that will measure in the 0-100% range.
Calibration
A feature unique to the EASZ-1 BS& monitor is the ability to change inherent calibration curves. Straightforward applications need no change to well known dielectric curves for oils of fixed density or salinity. It is possible in the case of applications where known "contamination" from other sources may be causing unacceptable readouts which do not correlate to well managed sampling and laboratory testing. In such cases, the only real and acceptable scientific method to assure users who do not want to put all their trust in online monitors is to correlate site measurements with lab reports from frequent representative samples using spot and composite techniques. The question of representative sampling is a whole science in itself and should be dealt with separately and intelligently. Having dealt with the representative sampling and lab analysis, the EASZ-1 BS& monitor has a unique "curve editing" feature where built in water/oil versus dielectric can be modified to lab reports. This will enable the actual on site measurements to tally with laboratory results, whatever form of "contamination"
Application and Installation
In most cases, the installation of the EASZ-1 BS& monitor is straightforward. As with any manufacturer, there are built in calibration curves for water /oil vs dielectric constant.
Much has been said and reported by various instrumentation manufacturers regarding the accuracy of watercut meters. The truth is that little attention has been paid to actual site and process conditions which can affect the accuracy of watercut meters. The EASZ-1 BS&W monitor measuring hydrocarbon fluids is a highly accurate device, however, the aim of any scientific analysis would be to measure water/oil ratios as accurately as possible. This means that installation and application is of great importance. Some applications may require bypass designs, static mixers and possibly portable oil sampling systems. EESIFLO® cooperates with companies such as Welker Engineering Pte Ltd (a known leader in the representative sampling and analysis of oil) in cases where clients wish to improve the gathering of representative data and optimize the use of field instrumentation.
